A Celestial Rodentia adventure: Prepare for Lift-Off (2/4)

The engineering bay smelled like warm metal, fresh paint, and machine oil, and Rocky loved every bit of it. Toolboxes stood in neat rows along the walls. A long steel table ran down the middle of the room, covered edge to edge with half finished rocket parts, all of them waiting for somebody with strong paws and a steady eye to put them together right. Today was thrust and aerodynamics test day, the second big step in getting the Celestial Rodentia ready for launch, and Rocky had been up since before the sun, humming to himself while he sharpened tools that were already perfectly sharp.

"Nothing wrong with double checking," he muttered, running a paw along a wrench that gleamed like it was brand new.

He was a broad, sturdy guinea pig with shoulders built for hauling engine parts twice his size and paws that never seemed to sit still. Where Gizmo solved problems with big ideas and Luna solved them with quiet patience, Rocky solved them the way he always had: by rolling up his sleeves, grabbing the nearest tool, and getting to work. A stuck valve, a stripped screw, a busted thruster coil, none of it scared him. If something was broken, Rocky could fix it. If something wasn't broken yet, he could usually find a way to make it stronger anyway, just in case.

By the time the rest of the crew wandered in, yawning and blinking against the bright overhead lights, Rocky already had the day's assignment chalked up on the big board in his own blocky handwriting: build a small model rocket, test it down the range, and see whose design flew the fastest and the straightest. Whichever design won would get bolted straight onto the blueprints for the real Celestial Rodentia's booster fins.

Gizmo read the board twice, already muttering equations under his breath. Luna studied it calmly, the way she studied everything, like it was one more star chart to memorize. Nova bounced over to peer out the big bay window at the long, straight test range stretching off into the distance. Cosmo grabbed a spare microphone off a nearby cart and pretended to interview an invisible reporter about the day's big race, and Starlight, quiet as always, slipped in last and settled near the back where she could see everything without anyone quite noticing her.

"Fastest and toughest," Rocky said, cracking his knuckles with a grin. "That's me. Every single time."

Dr. Reyes, the engineer who ran the test range, clapped her hands together, and the whole bay went quiet. She had a streak of grease on one cheek and the kind of grin that meant she genuinely loved her job.

"Today you're going to learn what actually makes a rocket go, and go fast," she said. "It isn't magic. It's physics, and every one of you already understands more of it than you think."

She held up a balloon, stretched its neck, and let go. It zipped wildly across the room in loops and spirals before flopping to the floor near Nova's feet.

"That," Dr. Reyes said, "is a rocket engine. Air rushes out one end, and the balloon gets pushed the opposite direction. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Push something one way hard enough, and it pushes you back the other way, just as hard. That is the whole secret behind every rocket ever built, from the very first ones to the ones carrying astronauts to the space station right now."

Gizmo's eyes lit up instantly, and he started scribbling notes so fast his pencil nearly smoked. Luna nodded slowly, turning the idea over the same careful way she turned over navigation charts. Nova scooped up the deflated balloon, delighted, and handed it to Cosmo, who promptly squeezed out a rude noise that made Starlight, tucked near the back, clap a paw over her mouth to hide a laugh.

Rocky just grinned. He already knew that one, in his paws if not in fancy words. Every time he fired up the Celestial Rodentia's thrusters, hot gas roared out the back and the whole ship leaped forward. Physics wasn't new information to him. It was just Tuesday.

"Real rockets take it a step further," Dr. Reyes continued, pulling up a diagram of a tall rocket split into three stacked sections. "They carry their fuel in stages, big sections stacked on top of each other. As each stage burns through its fuel, it becomes nothing but dead weight, so the rocket drops it and keeps only what it still needs. Carrying less weight means the remaining engines can push the rocket faster and farther, instead of wasting all that thrust just hauling around empty tanks."

"Waste not," Rocky said approvingly, arms crossed. "Get rid of what you don't need. Keep what's strong."

"Exactly," said Dr. Reyes. "And speaking of speed, does anyone know how fast a rocket actually has to go just to make it into orbit around Earth?"

Nobody guessed right on the first few tries, not even Gizmo, though he came closest. Dr. Reyes finally told them herself: about seventeen thousand five hundred miles an hour, fast enough to circle the entire planet in about ninety minutes, just to stay in orbit and not fall back down. To leave Earth's gravity behind completely and head out toward the Moon or beyond, a rocket needs even more speed than that, somewhere around twenty five thousand miles an hour, a number scientists call escape velocity.

Rocky let out a low whistle. Fast. That was exactly the kind of number his kind of muscle liked. If speed was the goal, he already knew how he'd get there: build it tough, build it strong, and light the biggest fire he could underneath it.

Dr. Reyes split the crew into two design teams and stepped back to let them work. Rocky, naturally, took the lead on his team, with Gizmo running speed calculations on a battered notepad and Cosmo relaying test range updates over the bay's loudspeaker in his best announcer voice. Nova wandered off toward a big wind machine at the far end of the range, curious about how moving air actually pushed against things in its path.

"Watch this," Nova called, holding up a maple seed she'd found stuck to someone's boot. She let it drop in front of the wind machine, and it spun through the air in a slow, lazy helicopter twirl instead of just falling straight down. "Its shape does that all on its own. No engine, no fuel, just the right shape catching the air exactly right. I bet that matters for us too."

Nobody quite stopped to listen except Starlight, who watched the little seed spin all the way to the floor with quiet, careful attention.

Rocky built the way he always built: solid. He reinforced his team's model rocket with extra layers of material "just in case," bolted on a wider, thicker nose cone, and added heavier stabilizer fins because, in his experience, heavier things didn't wobble around nearly as much when they hit trouble. Luna helped keep the frame balanced and true while Gizmo double checked every measurement, and by the time Rocky finally set the finished model down on the table, it looked less like a rocket and more like a small, determined tank wearing a pointy hat.

"That," he said, giving it a proud thump, "is not going anywhere it doesn't mean to go."

Across the room, Starlight worked quietly on the second team's model, mostly by herself, with Nova drifting over now and then to compare notes about wind and shape. While everyone else in the bay debated bolts and thrust numbers, Starlight kept running her whiskers gently along the edges of her small rocket's fins, adjusting them by fractions of an inch, sanding one corner a little smoother, shaving another sliver thinner. She barely said a word about why. She just kept feeling her way toward something that seemed right, the way she always did.

"Real guinea pigs actually do that too, you know," Dr. Reyes mentioned, pausing beside her. "A guinea pig's whiskers are almost as wide as its whole body, and it uses them to feel out gaps and tight spaces before deciding whether it can fit through. You're just doing what guinea pigs are built to do: measuring the world in careful little touches instead of guessing."

Starlight blinked, surprised, then went right back to trimming, a small, pleased flush warming her ears.

By the time both teams were finished, the two model rockets sat side by side on the test range's launch rail. Rocky's was broad shouldered and gleaming, thick with extra padding and bolts. Starlight and Nova's was slimmer, almost delicate looking, with fins so thin they seemed like they might bend in a strong breeze.

"No offense," Rocky said, eyeing it, "but that one looks like it'll blow over if Nova sneezes."

Nova laughed. Starlight didn't answer at all. She just quietly checked her fins one more time.

Dr. Reyes counted down from ten while the whole crew crowded around the safety glass at the edge of the range. Cosmo handled the countdown over the loudspeaker, his voice cracking with excitement on the last few numbers, and even Luna, usually so calm, leaned forward with her paws pressed flat against the glass.

At zero, both rockets fired at once in a controlled blast of pressurized air, racing each other down a long, straight aerodynamic track.

Rocky's rocket surged off the rail first, powerful and fast right out of the gate, exactly the way he'd planned. For one glorious second, he punched the air with a triumphant paw.

Then it started to wobble.

The extra padding he'd added for toughness caught more air than he'd expected, tugging unevenly at the frame with every inch it traveled. The thick, blunt nose he'd been so proud of pushed hard against the air ahead of it instead of slicing cleanly through, and the heavier stabilizer fins, built to resist getting knocked around, ended up dragging the whole rocket sideways instead of holding it straight. Two thirds of the way down the range, it tumbled clean off the rail and skidded to an undignified stop in a pile of foam padding.

Starlight and Nova's slim little rocket, the one Rocky had teased for looking like it might blow over, shot down the exact same rail like it barely noticed the air was there at all. Its narrow nose parted the wind instead of fighting it. Its thin fins, the ones Starlight had spent all morning shaping by fractions of an inch with her whiskers, held it dead straight the whole way down, and it crossed the finish line first by a wide, embarrassing margin.

The bay went silent for a second. Then Nova let out a whoop, Gizmo dropped his notepad in surprise, and Cosmo, still holding the microphone, said, "well, that happened," which made everyone laugh except Rocky, who stood very still, staring at his tumbled, dented rocket.

"I don't understand," Rocky said, picking it up out of the foam. It felt heavier in his paws than he remembered building it. "I made it tough. I made it strong. Strong is supposed to win."

Dr. Reyes crouched down next to him. "Strong helps you survive a hit," she said gently. "It doesn't help you avoid needing to take one in the first place. Speed and stability out there aren't really about how much force you can push through the air. They're about how little the air has to fight you at all. That's what aerodynamics actually means: shaping something so smoothly that the air barely notices you're there."

Rocky looked over at Starlight's rocket, still sitting proudly at the far end of the range. He thought about every extra bolt and layer of padding he'd added, each one meant to make his rocket harder to stop. He hadn't been building something fast. He'd been building something that could survive not being fast, which, he realized slowly, was a completely different thing.

That evening, back in the quiet engineering bay, Rocky sat next to his dented, padded rocket for a long time, turning it over in his paws. Starlight eventually wandered over and sat down beside him without saying anything, the way she usually let her actions speak instead of her words.

"Show me," Rocky finally said, nodding at her winning rocket. "How you knew where to trim it. I want to understand it, not just look at it."

So Starlight showed him. How she'd run her whiskers along each fin edge to feel exactly where the air would catch and where it would slide smoothly by. How a tiny sliver shaved off one corner made a bigger difference than an entire extra layer bolted on somewhere else. How sometimes the bravest thing an engineer could do wasn't to reinforce something, it was to trust that less material, placed exactly right, could do the job better than more material placed carelessly.

By the time the rest of the crew wandered back in, Rocky and Starlight had his old rocket half stripped down, its extra padding removed piece by piece, its blunt nose reshaped into something sleeker. It wasn't as tough anymore. It didn't need to be.

"New rule," Rocky announced to the room, holding his lighter, leaner rocket up like a trophy. "Strong is good. Strong and smart is better. From now on, nothing gets bolted onto this ship without Starlight checking the shape first."

Starlight went pink under her fur and mumbled something nobody quite caught, but she looked proud enough to burst.

Gizmo, who had been quietly running new numbers the whole time, glanced up from his notes. "You know what this means for the real Celestial Rodentia's booster fins, right? We use Starlight's design. The math backs it up completely."

"Obviously," Rocky said, like it had been his idea all along.

Luna caught Starlight's eye and smiled, and even Rocky had to admit, watching his old, tumbled test rocket sitting bent and defeated at the end of the range, that being right hadn't felt nearly as good as building something that actually worked. Nova bumped her shoulder against Starlight's in celebration, and Cosmo, ever the showman, declared over the loudspeaker that this had officially been "the fastest lesson in the history of the engineering bay," which made even Rocky laugh.

Later, back at the dorm, a real guinea pig in the little garden enclosure gnawed contentedly on a wooden chew stick, wearing its teeth down the way guinea pig teeth need to be worn down their whole lives, since they never stop growing. Rocky watched it for a moment and thought that maybe that wasn't so different from what he'd learned today. The strongest thing in that bay hadn't been the part that refused to change. It had been the part willing to keep getting reshaped, worn down, and adjusted, again and again, until it finally worked exactly right.

Dr. Reyes gathered the whole crew together as the sun went down over the test range, its long shadow stretching across the launch rail. "Two big steps down," she said. "Thrust and shape, both handled today. Next up: filling the tanks, and finding out just how much fuel it actually takes to get six guinea pigs off this planet."

Rocky grinned, already itching to get his paws on something new to build. "Bring it on," he said. "I'll figure out how to make it stronger."

Starlight, quiet as ever, just smiled and gently added, "and lighter."

Rocky laughed out loud at that, loud enough that it echoed clear across the bay, and for once, he didn't argue.

What we learned in this episode

  • Rockets fly because of Newton's Third Law: every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Hot gas rushes out the back of the engine, and that push sends the rocket flying the opposite direction, forward.
  • Rockets use stages to fly farther and faster. As each fuel section empties, the rocket drops it as dead weight, so the remaining engines don't have to waste thrust hauling around empty tanks.

  • Aerodynamics is about shape, not just strength. A smooth, narrow shape lets air slide past instead of pushing back, which often matters more for speed and stability than how tough or heavily reinforced something is.
  • Real guinea pigs use their whiskers to measure the world. A guinea pig's whiskers are almost as wide as its whole body, and it uses them to feel out gaps and spaces before deciding if it can fit through, precision measuring tools built right onto its face.
  • Guinea pig teeth never stop growing. That's why real guinea pigs gnaw constantly. It keeps their teeth worn down to a safe, healthy length their whole lives.
